Kungahälla was the first name of the town of Kungälv, which was one of Norway's most important towns in medieval times. According to legend it was founded in the 10th century. Kungahälla was devasted several times. In 1612 the town was moved to Fästningsholmen and rebuilt under the protection of Bohus fortress. The new town was called Ny Kongelf. In 1658 the county of Bohuslän became Swedish and even Kungälv. At that time the town began to grow up where it is situated today.
